DÍA 3. ATAR – OUDANE (2h)
FB

Chinguetti was founded at the end of the 13th century and a center for the caravan trade between North Africa and Black Africa, being the metropolis with the greatest cultural apogee in the region at the beginning of the 17th century. Around 12 libraries with more than 1,300 invaluable manuscripts from this period are preserved, some of them date from the 9th and 10th centuries, with texts from the Koran, philosophy, grammar, medicine, mathematics, poetry, astronomy, etc. Today Chinguetti is the 7th Holy City of Islam, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996, Cultural City of Mauritania and Gate of the Desert. This city has been maintained for 7 centuries, thanks to the energy and creativity of its inhabitants. From long periods of drought, epidemics, hunger, etc. irreparable damage has occurred. Deprived of a large part of its population, it is currently in a delicate situation due to the incessant advance of the desert. According to information provided by the mayor of Chinguetti, the current population of the municipality is around 15,000 inhabitants, of which 5,000 live settled in the City of Chinguetti and the remaining 10,000 are nomads who move through the desert around Chinguetti looking for water and pasture for camels and cattle.
