Last Places have designed this ethnographic trip to southern Nigeria<\/a> with the aim of learning about the worldview of the Yoruba ethnic group<\/strong><\/a>, as well as the Orisha religion<\/strong>, also known as Voodoo. This trip has been designed for lovers of cultures and religions, passionate about history and adventurers.<\/p>\n

This ethnographic trip to southern Nigeria, focusing on the so-called \u2018Yoruba country\u2019, combines ethnographic experiences with historical and cultural heritage visits. We will explore Lagos\u2019 popular neighborhoods such as Makoko and Lagos Island. Also, we will visit the Abeokuta fetish market<\/strong>, where all the ingredients for making amulets and magic potions can be found, such as live and dried chameleons, chimpanzee limbs, plants with medicinal and mystical uses, etc. In addition, we will visit sacred places for the Yoruba religion<\/strong> such as Olumo Rock, the Ife museum and the sacred Yoruba forest of Oshogbo (UNESCO heritage), as well as religious sanctuaries. We will also have the opportunity to witness a twin ceremony<\/strong>, as well as Zangbeto, Egunuko, Egungun and Geledes masquerades<\/strong>. Additionally, we will discover exceptional Afro-Brazilian architecture<\/strong> in little-visited cities such as Ijebu Ode and Abeokuta.<\/p>\n

\u25ba Canoe tour through the Makoko neighborhood in Lagos<\/h3>\n

The itinerary will begin in the eccentric capital of Lagos, with a canoe visit to the Makoko lake district<\/strong>, which is built on stilts. This neighborhood features a fascinating mix of ancient voodoo traditions<\/strong> and fishing communities.<\/p>\n

\u25ba We will witness ceremonies and masquerades of the Orisha religion<\/h4>\n

Egungun masquerade<\/h4>\n

In Oshogbo we will witness the liberation of the Egungun<\/strong>, the spirits of the ancestors, figures respected and feared by the community.<\/p>\n

Geledes mask dance<\/h4>\n

The Gelede mask<\/strong> dance aims to pay tribute to the primordial mother, as well as praise the role that women play in Yoruba society.<\/p>\n

Egunuko Spirits<\/h4>\n

We will witness the release of the Egunuko spirits<\/strong>, masks up to 3 meters high that perform the function of protecting the town.<\/p>\n

Twins ceremony<\/h4>\n

We will attend a twins ceremony<\/strong>, who play a special role in Yoruba society.<\/p>\n

\u25ba We will explore the Yoruba country to understand their worldview<\/h3>\n

Abeokuta<\/h4>\n

In this ancient city (19th century) our immersion in Yoruba culture will begin by visiting the impressive Olumo Rock<\/strong>. This rocky mountain is considered sacred according to the Orisha religion. We will visit the fetish market, an Orisha temple, the royal palace of Alaka and walk through the Afro-Brazilian neighborhood, full of richly decorated historical buildings. Also, we will visit the mosque and the Itoke market, famous for its textiles and tailors.<\/p>\n

Ife<\/h4>\n

This city was built on the ashes of the ancient Kingdom of Ife<\/strong>. Here the evolved Yoruba agricultural civilization developed in the 10th century, as well as a colorful and mystical universe of voodoo deities. We will visit the Oba royal palace, the mysterious Opa Oranmiyan stela and the Oduduwa temple-altar. We will have the opportunity to admire some ancient terracotta objects from about 1000 years ago.<\/p>\n

Oshogbo<\/h4>\n
Osun-Osogbo Sacred Grove<\/h5>\n

We will walk through the Osun-Osogbo Sacred Groove (UNESCO World Heritage Site). In it is the pantheon of the Orishas, among which a special place is reserved for the protective and benevolent goddess Osun. We will also observe numerous sculptural works by Susanne Wenger.<\/p>\n

Visit to the Susanne Wenger House<\/h5>\n

We will visit the house where this Yoruba artist and priestess lived. She was a leading advocate for the preservation and reconstruction of the Sacred Forest.<\/p>\n

Ijebu Ode<\/h4>\n

In this city we will enjoy the Afro-Brazilian vestiges, the royal palace, British colonial architecture and several extravagant buildings linked to the golden age of the cocoa trade.<\/p>\n
