Visiting the Nuba tribe in South Kordofan is a dream of many tribal lovers around the world. After a prospective expedition in early 2024, anthropologist and Last Places\u2019 founder Joan Riera was able to reach the Nuba Mountains. On this trip to the Nuba Mountains (Sudan), we will enter through South Sudan to discover a world that is still virgin and worth visiting.<\/p>\n

We will have a base in a small town (bungalows from an NGO), and from there we will explore different Nuba communities to learn about their daily lives and traditions. There will be some hiking (maximum 2 hours), and we will be able to photograph a hidden place from the outside world.<\/p>\n

\u25ba We will learn about the culture and way of life of the Nuba people<\/h3>\n

Our trip to the Nuba Mountains will take us to the headquarters of the SPLA-N (Sudan People’s Liberation Army – North). There, we will meet with regional authorities. After the official visit, we will hike to the traditional home of Sultan Mesakin. We will learn about the Nuba social organization, their customs, and their lifestyle in these isolated lands. Later, in a Korongo village, we will meet with the local sultan in his magnificent mud-brick palace. There, we will witness a unique session of traditional male body painting, one of the most fascinating expressions of Nuba identity.<\/p>\n

Also, we’ll visit the British colonial school and learn about the “Closed District” policy, which prevented development in the Nuba Mountains from 1918 to 1938. We’ll also explore a market where surrounding tribes gather to trade, sell, and pay for goods in a vibrant environment that reflects the cultural diversity of the region.<\/p>\n

On our trip to the Nuba Mountains, we’ll meet a Kujur woman (animist priestess) who will perform a ritual in the sacred cave in the Shat Hills. This will be a special moment to immerse ourselves in the spirituality of this people.<\/p>\n

\u25ba We will admire the Nuba vernacular architecture and its surroundings<\/h3>\n

On this trip to the Nuba Mountains, we will delve into traditional Nuba settlements. These are located between majestic and gigantic granite formations. There, we will have the opportunity to admire its unique architecture and the way it blends into the landscape. After visiting Sultan Niemeri’s house, where Leni Riefenstahl spent a few days during her first visit to the mountains in 1965, we will walk for two hours through the impressive traditional Nuba Mesakin villages. Along the way, we’ll meet the locals, learn about their mountain life, and enjoy the fantastic natural scenery.<\/p>\n

During our trip to the Nuba Mountains, we’ll also climb to the top of the Shat Hills with Sultan Shat and his young warriors. From this natural fortress, we’ll enjoy breathtaking panoramic views.<\/p>\n

\u25ba We will attend a traditional Nuba wrestling match<\/h3>\n

Our trip to the Nuba Mountains will take us to Nuba cattle camps. There, young men not only learn to care for their prized livestock but also spend time practicing traditional Nuba wrestling, known as “Sura.” Early in the morning, we will visit one of these camps, where we will witness this ancient practice. More than a sport, Nuba wrestling is a rite of passage to adulthood and a key element in the identity of young warriors.<\/p>\n

The day will conclude at the shrine of a Kujur (Nuba priest), where a blessing ceremony will be held for the young people, highlighting the importance of tradition and spirituality in the life of this community.<\/p>\n
