We have chosen these dates for the fabulous Carnival in Port-au-Prince and because it is an ideal time to witness voodoo rites. We will travel in a comfortable minibus with a local guide specialized in culture.<\/p>\n

Haiti is perhaps the last place in the Caribbean. The unstable social and political situation has driven away the luxury resorts and masses of tourists that have forever changed the Caribbean islands. Haiti has a fascinating history, its struggle for independence, its dictators, and a unique culture marked by its ancestral connection to Benin, where much of its Afro-descendant population originates.<\/p>\n

History and struggle for independence<\/h3>\n

This trip to Haiti will immerse us in the history of the first country in Latin America to achieve independence. We’ll visit Milot, where the revolution against the French colonizers was planned, and explore the Citadel of La Ferri\u00e8re and the Palace of Sans Souci, built by Henry Christophe, one of the leaders of the independence movement. We’ll also visit Fort Dauphin, built in 1643 in a mountainous region that served as a refuge for freed slaves.<\/p>\n

Carnival and Voodoo Spirituality<\/h3>\n

The Port-au-Prince Carnival is one of the most vibrant festivities in the Caribbean and an essential part of this trip to Haiti. This celebration blends African and Christian traditions, resulting in a unique spectacle of music, dance, and colour. In addition, we will delve into voodoo, a religion brought by African slaves in the 16th century, which believes the spirits of the dead remain among the living to protect them. We’ll visit the Jacmel cemetery and homes where rituals are celebrated, experiencing firsthand this spirituality that remains deeply present in Haitian culture.<\/p>\n

Exploration of nature and rural life<\/h3>\n

Our trip to Haiti will take us to discover the Acul Des Pins waterfall, a sacred site where Christian and animist pilgrimages take place. Also, we will explore life in coastal communities, interacting with fishermen and visiting a village of Maroons, descendants of slaves who managed to escape and form self-sufficient communities in the mountains.<\/p>\n

Colonial heritage and historic architecture<\/h3>\n

We’ll visit cities that were key to the sugar trade during the 18th century. Cap-Ha\u00eftien, known as the “Paris of the Antilles,” preserves an important architectural heritage, including its cathedral, the iron market, and its 19th-century houses. We’ll also explore Jacmel, famous for its gingerbread-style houses, a legacy of 19th-century American architects that has become a symbol of Haitian art and identity.<\/p>\n
