Previously, the young people underwent a meticulous make-up session, in which natural pigments were applied to enhance the whiteness of their teeth and eyes. The young people wear their typical cowry ornaments, colored fabrics and ostrich feathers.<\/p>\n

Under the effect of natural stimulants, the boys begin to dance with slow and hypnotic movements. The dance is accompanied by recited verses and grimaces that highlight their teeth and eyes, reaching a kind of trance. Gerewol is definitely one of the most evocative traditional events in all of Africa.<\/p>\n
