Visiting the Nuba tribe in South Kordofan is the dream of many tribal lovers around the world. After a prospective expedition in early 2024, anthropologist and Last Places\u2019 founder Joan Riera was able to reach the Nuba Mountains. Through this tribal trip to the Nuba Mountains, we will discover a world that is still virgin and worth visiting. We will have a base in a small town (basic huts from an NGO), and from there we will explore different Nuba tribal communities to learn about their daily lives and traditions. There will be some hiking (maximum 2 hours), and we will be able to photograph a hidden place from the outside world.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

This tribal trip to Nuba Mountains will allow us to explore the internal diversity of the region. We will visit different Nuba groups such as the Moro, Shat, Krongo and Mesakin. On the one hand, we will discover the warrior aesthetics of the Nuba Shat. On the other, we will engage with communities where traditions remain fully alive. Furthermore, we will observe how each group maintains its own identity. Thus, the trip will reveal exceptional cultural richness.<\/p>\n

Initiation rituals and animist spirituality<\/h3>\n

One of the key moments of the tribal trip to Nuba Mountains will be the observation of initiation rites. During these ceremonies, young men undergo complex symbolic processes. In addition, we will witness body painting and the use of sacred spaces. We will also meet the Kujur, a key spiritual figure in Nuba culture. The Kujur will act as a mediator between the visible and spiritual worlds. In this sense, the trip will offer insight into a deeply rooted cosmology.<\/p>\n

Nuba wrestling: identity, aesthetics and social cohesion<\/h3>\n

During the tribal trip to Nuba Mountains, we will attend traditional wrestling known as Sura. These contests are an essential part of social life. On the one hand, they bring together different communities. On the other, they help establish relationships and strengthen bonds. Moreover, they will allow us to observe body aesthetics in motion. Thus, the trip will showcase one of the region\u2019s most powerful cultural expressions.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The tribal trip to Nuba Mountains will lead us through landscapes shaped by granite formations. We will walk between villages located in elevated areas. During these routes, we will learn about mountain life. Furthermore, we will observe how traditional architecture has been preserved over time. Therefore, the trip will combine nature and culture within a single setting.<\/p>\n

A unique photographic experience<\/h3>\n

Throughout the tribal trip to Nuba Mountains, we will have multiple photographic opportunities. Direct interaction with communities will facilitate the capture of authentic moments. After our time in the mountains, the trip will continue in South Sudan. There, we will meet communities such as the Dinka and the Shilluk. In addition, we will hear about their former kingdoms and traditions. In this way, the trip will extend its cultural scope beyond the mountains.<\/p>\n
