The Central Africa Republic is one of the most remote and poorest countries in Africa, yet it is quite interesting from a traveller’s point of view. It is still virgin in tourism terms. Out of Dzanga Sangha Reserve not much is known about this country. After a prospective trip in 2025 Last Places’ team of travel experts has designed a very special itinerary that combines visits to Bangui and Boali Waterfalls with a unique immersion to Banda tribal territory in the very heart of Central Africa’s interior. Here, we will be able to assist during the month of November to a Ganza rite of passage, accompanied by the impressive Broto horn music. This trip to the Central African Republic is a deep adventure to a Last Place in Africa. We will move in 4x4 vehicles and be accompanied by an expert Last Places’ guide.

Banda culture: rituals, initiation and worldview

The trip to the Central African Republic will take us into the heart of the country to closely encounter the Banda people, one of the most representative ethnic groups in the territory. From the outset, we will enter a traditional neighbourhood where we will observe social organisation and daily life. Likewise, we will spend time with its inhabitants to understand their cultural practices. During the trip to the Central African Republic, we will meet an animist priestess. With her, we will explore the spiritual dimension of the group. In addition, we will witness a traditional healing ritual linked to ancestral beliefs. Thus, this experience will allow us to interpret the relationship between religion, health and community.

Initiation ceremonies and community life

One of the central moments of the trip to the Central African Republic will be participation in initiation ceremonies. On the one hand, we will attend the Ganza dance, a collective expression that marks the transition to adulthood. On the other, we will witness the Broto musical ritual, where traditional horns made from termite-shaped tree roots are used. Moreover, we will spend time with the initiates and their families. In this way, we will understand the educational, social and symbolic processes that define this stage of life. Therefore, this phase will provide a deep immersion into Banda cultural structures.

Anti-Balaka: understanding the conflict

The trip to the Central African Republic will also include a meeting with members of the Anti-Balaka militias. This encounter will help contextualise the country’s recent conflict. Likewise, we will analyse the role of these groups within the current socio-political dynamics. We will observe their symbols, clothing and elements of spiritual protection. In addition, we will understand how they are organised and the motivations that have shaped their evolution. Thus, this stage will offer direct insight into the political and social complexity of the territory.

Fulani: identity in a context of crisis

During the trip to the Central African Republic, we will visit a Fulani refugee camp near Bambari. There, we will meet communities displaced by recent conflict. We will also engage with elders who will share their experiences. Through dialogue, we will better understand the tensions between different religious and cultural groups. In addition, we will analyse the human consequences of the conflict. For this reason, this stage will provide an essential social dimension for understanding the country.

Boali waterfalls: nature in its purest form

The trip to the Central African Republic will include an excursion to the Boali waterfalls, one of the most impressive landscapes in the country. These falls stand out for their scale and visual power. Furthermore, the natural setting will provide a pause within the journey. Thus, this visit will introduce a scenic dimension that complements the cultural experiences. Therefore, the itinerary will balance nature and anthropology.

Urban reality of Bangui

The trip to the Central African Republic will begin and end in Bangui, the capital and main urban centre of the country. From the outset, we will tour the city to observe its contrasts. We will visit the Catholic cathedral, the central market and the colonial district. In this way, we will understand both its historical legacy and present reality. In addition, we will enjoy a dinner by the Ubangui River, a key space in local life. During our stay, we will also visit the National Museum, if it is open. Finally, there will be time for shopping at the craft market. Overall, the trip to the Central African Republic offers an intense immersion into a little-known reality. We will not only visit places. We will also understand cultures, conflicts and ways of life. For this reason, this route is ideal for travellers interested in anthropology, complex contexts and authentic experiences.
