We will begin by visiting a traditional settlement of the Lowland Muila, regarded as one of Angola’s most representative ethnic communities. Here, we will discover their way of life and admire the elaborate body adornments and distinctive hairstyles worn by the women, created with clay and colourful beads that serve as powerful symbols of identity. Later, we will explore the colonial town of Chibia and visit its rural market, frequented by Mountain Muila women who come to sell agricultural produce and purchase fabrics and everyday goods. During our stay, we will meet the Humbi queen and spend time with members of the community. We will learn about their traditions, social organisation and the important role that elaborate ceremonial hairstyles continue to play within their culture. This encounter will provide an exceptional opportunity to experience a society that has preserved many of its ancestral customs.The Himba: the semi-nomadic life of the desert
Once in Namibia, we will visit a traditional Himba settlement to gain first-hand insight into the lifestyle of one of southern Africa’s best-known communities. We will discover their homes, built from wood, mud and natural materials, as well as their family structure and close relationship with livestock. We will also learn about the traditions that continue to define the identity of this semi-nomadic people and observe the use of otjize, the mixture of butterfat and ochre that women apply to their skin and hair as protection against the harsh desert climate. We will cross into Namibia for a full-day safari in Etosha National Park, one of southern Africa’s foremost wildlife sanctuaries. During the safari, we will travel through a variety of ecosystems inhabited by elephants, giraffes, lions, zebras, wildebeest, antelopes and rhinoceroses, together with many other species adapted to this remarkable environment. This day will offer the opportunity to experience one of the finest safari destinations in Africa.Twyfelfontein and the Skeleton Coast
The cultural trip to Angola and Namibia will continue through the Twyfelfontein region, celebrated for its dramatic desert scenery and outstanding archaeological heritage. We will explore areas containing ancient rock engravings and striking rock formations before reaching sections of the legendary Skeleton Coast. If conditions allow, we may see some of the historic shipwrecks that have made this remote Atlantic shoreline so famous.Marine safari in Walvis Bay
Another unforgettable experience of the journey will be a marine safari in Walvis Bay. During the cruise, we may observe Cape fur seals, dolphins, whales and other marine species that inhabit the cold Atlantic waters, including the remarkable ocean sunfish (Mola mola). This excursion will showcase the extraordinary marine biodiversity of Namibia.The Namib Desert: dunes and endless landscapes
One of the defining moments of the cultural trip to Angola and Namibia will be the exploration of the Namib Desert, widely regarded as the oldest desert on Earth. We will visit some of its most iconic sites, including Sossusvlei, the famous Dune 45, Dead Vlei and Sesriem Canyon. Throughout the excursion, we will admire vast red sand dunes, ancient fossilised trees and a surprising variety of wildlife adapted to the harsh desert environment, including oryx, springbok, jackals, ostriches and the remarkable fog-basking beetles. This stage of the cultural trip to Angola and Namibia will reveal some of the most spectacular landscapes in southern Africa.Luanda, Lubango, Chibia and Swakopmund: cities shaped by history and colonial heritage
Beyond its landscapes and traditional communities, the cultural trip to Angola and Namibia will also explore some of the most fascinating historic towns and cities in both countries. We will begin in Luanda, where we will discover the city’s Portuguese colonial heritage. We will visit the São Miguel Fortress, the Anthropological Museum, the Iron Palace. In addition, we will visit the colonial cathedral, each reflecting different chapters of Angola’s history. Then, we will visit Chibia, a small colonial town that has preserved much of its traditional architecture. Our journey will also include the colonial quarter of Lubango and its excellent Ethnographic Museum, whose collections provide valuable insight into the cultural diversity of southern Angola. In Namibia, we will explore Swakopmund, an elegant town founded during the German colonial period. It retains numerous historic buildings and a distinctive atmosphere unlike anywhere else in the country. We will also stop at Solitaire, a tiny settlement in the heart of the desert, renowned for its unique character and its famous traditional apple pie. In this way, the cultural trip to Angola and Namibia combines historical heritage, cultural diversity and some of the most extraordinary landscapes on the African continent.
