17 - 27 may 2022 (11 days / 9 nights) / FULLY BOOKED / TRIP COMPLETED

The first part of the trip will focus on ethnographic and colonial aspects of the Democratic Republic of Congo exploring Kinshasa and the remote Mbandaka on the shores of the mighty Congo River. Here we will discover traditional pygmy groups and the Ekonda, one of the most conservative and fascinating tribes in the Congolese jungle.
The second part focuses on one of DR Congo’s ancient kingdoms. We will visit the Yaka kingdom, being hosted by his king.

Isolated tribes and sects

Our goal is the isolated Bantu and Pygmy communities along the Congo River. We will also visit a local sect; after decolonization sects appeared that mix ancient African beliefs with aesthetic elements and Christian liturgy.

Colonial heritage

Kinshasa is an African mega-city with its own unique elements; the 'sapeurs' (society of entertainers and elegant people), voodoo wrestling or fetish wrestling, Suku music (Congolese salsa), and the national museum. We will also visit the city of Kisantu with its nice colonial architecture, and the old train station of Mbanza Ngungu.

Ancient kingdoms

We will explore the Yaka Kingdom, meeting the Yaka King and learn about local monarchies in today’s republic. Then we will visit the sacred Yaka village, enjoy a traditional masquerade dance and a ritual blood sacrifice.
