The Ethiopian Orthodox calendar points every year the exact time for the Epiphany. This cultural and mystic trip to Ethiopia develops around the rituals and ceremonies around the Christian myth of Epiphany. We will explore the holy cities of ancient Abyssinia of Lalibela and Gondar. Besides religious celebrations we will also visit traditional rural communities to learn about the Amhara culture, specially the female facial and neck tattoos.

We will attend the rituals and ceremonies of the Timkat

This trip to northern Ethiopia offers the opportunity to experience the colorful Timkat festival for three days in the city of Gondar. We will attend the Epiphany procession, during which the high priests of each church carry the Ark of the Covenant to the 16th-century pool to spend the night there. One of the high points of the Timket is the baptism, which we will also attend. According to the Ethiopian calendar, the third day of Timkat is the annual St. Michael's Day, and there is a large procession.

We will tour the historic city of Gondar

During this trip to Ethiopia, we will explore the most important and emblematic places of Gondar, as well as the Royal Enclosure, with six castles and several other buildings. In addition, we will visit the Fasilidas pool, which continues to be used today for the Timkat celebration, and the Debre Birhan Selassie church, which houses the most famous ceiling in Ethiopia, decorated in red, blue and gold tones.

We will visit the rock-cut churches of Lalibela

On this trip to northern Ethiopia, we will visit the famous Lalibela rock-hewn churches. We will visit the northwest group of sacred temples: Bet Medhane Alem, Bet Maryam, Bet Meskel, Bet Danaghel, Bet Mikael and Bet Golgotha. After lunch, we will continue with the group of southeastern churches: Bet Gabriel-Rufael, Bet Merkorios, Bet Amanual and Bet Abba Libanos. Finally, we will go to the most famous church of all: Bet Giyorgis, built in honor of Saint George, patron saint of Ethiopia.
