This trip to Cameroon is focused on experiencing the beautiful Gerewol Festival, where the young Fulani Mbororo nomads demonstrate their physical capabilities through hypnotic dances that will attract their future wives. At Last Places have been operating in Cameroon for many years. We know well the country and its different ethnic groups. For the last 6 years, we have been able to build a relationship with the Mbororo nomadic elders and chiefs that are the ones organizing the Gerewol every year.

After the well-known Gerewol Festival of Niger and Chad, the Cameroon Gerewol appears as another possibility of attending one of Africa’s most spectacular mating rituals. The looks and clothing of the young Mbororo Cameroon men are quite different from those in Chad, Niger, and Nigeria. Along with the Gerewol Festival, during this trip to Cameroon, we will meet different tribal groups. In addition, we will attend the Friday prayer near Ngaoundere’s royal palace.

‘Mbororo’ means landless person. Cameroon Mbororo belong to the bigger Fulani nation, that extends from Senegal up to Sudan across the African Sahel region. These nomadic Fulani from Northern Cameroon base their economy in cattle rearing and some basic agriculture. They also maintain the custom of decorating the face and part of the body with beautiful and complex tattoos that mark the social class and marital status of the wearer.

Ngaoundere is a bustling Muslim city. On Fridays, the local sultan leaves the old palace and walks with his court to the central mosque. There is music and a lot of colours.
