Mekeo and Bereina: Community Life and Local Traditions
One of the first great highlights of the expedition to Papua New Guinea will be spending time with the Mekeo community in Central Province. We will gain an insight into their daily life, learning about their family structures and the customs that continue to define this community. During our stay, we will share different cultural experiences. We will discover their cuisine, music, dances and local handicrafts. In this way, this first stage of the expedition to Papua New Guinea will allow us to establish direct contact with a community that preserves many expressions of its traditional identity.
The Goroka Highlands: Mountain Communities and Landscapes
The expedition to Papua New Guinea will continue towards the Goroka Highlands, where the landscape changes dramatically. Mountains, forests and agricultural valleys provide the setting for a rural way of life closely connected to the surrounding environment.
The Kutas Cave Dwellers
One of the most unique experiences will be visiting the Kutas cave dwellers, a semi-nomadic people living in the mountains. We will hike through agricultural areas and forests until we reach the caves where this community lives. Afterwards, we will spend time with its inhabitants and learn about aspects of their way of life. Thus, the expedition to Papua New Guinea will offer the opportunity to get closer to one of the most remote communities in the Highlands.Komoi: Community Life and Traditions
We will then travel into Komoi for an immersive experience with the local community. During our stay, we will discover different traditional practices and take part in activities connected with their daily life. Also, we will discover their cuisine, music, dances and handicrafts. In addition, we will have time to talk with local families and become immersed in their daily routines. This experience will provide a deeper understanding of the traditions that continue to form part of the identity of the Highlands communities.Kanigara and Sepik Culture: Tribal Art and Ancestral Traditions
The final stage of this journey will take us to Kanigara, in the Sepik region, one of the most culturally fascinating areas of Papua New Guinea. Our first encounter with the region will be marked by its extraordinary tribal art. We will discover traditional masks, wood carvings and distinctive spirit houses, elements that reflect the rich symbolism of the Sepik communities.
The Chambri Initiation Rite
One of the highlights of the expedition to Papua New Guinea will be witnessing the traditional initiation rite of young Chambri men. During this ceremony, scarification is carried out on the body with patterns evoking the scales of the crocodile, an animal of great symbolic importance in the region's culture. The resulting scars represent the initiation process and the young men's transition into adulthood. In this way, the expedition to Papua New Guinea will provide an opportunity to experience some of the country's most distinctive cultural expressions, combining community life, ancestral traditions, tribal art and initiation rituals.© Photos by Aníbal Bueno taken during an expedition to Papua New Guinea.
