This New Year's trip to Mauritania will begin in Nouakchott, from where we will penetrate into the Sahara desert. We will visit beautiful places and meet some ethnic groups along the way. Thereafter, we will camp in the desert under millions of stars and around the fire, while our guide will introduce us to the secrets of the different nomadic peoples that live in the area.
Before reaching the first caravan town, we will have the opportunity to visit the Fort de Saganne, as well as the rock paintings of Agrour. The city of Chinguetti (UNESCO World Heritage Site) is considered the seventh holy city of Islam. We will walk through the alleys of the citadel, discovering its famous stone mosque and libraries that contain ancient manuscripts. Our next stop will be in Ouadane, a city founded by the Berber in 1147. It was an important caravan center for the trade of salt, gold and dates, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
The itinerary of this trip will cross the most beautiful landscapes of Mauritania. For exemple, we will visit the M'haireth Oasis before arriving at Terjit, a wonderful Oasis nestled in a canyon. There we will refresh ourselves in a small natural pool formed by two springs that flow from the rock, one hot and the other cold, while we drink mint tea. Before reaching the Atlantic coast, we will stop at Choum. With a bit of luck we will be able to admire the Snim train, famous for being the longest and slowest in the world. Also, we will visit the Beni Amera monolith and the granite sculptures of the Aisha.
The trip will continue on the Atlantic coast, where we will visit the Banc D'Arguin National Park (UNESCO World Heritage Site), Cap Tafarit and Nouamghar. There, we will be able to admire magnificent landscapes, spot different types of birds and camp next to the dunes that fall into the sea. Finally, we will visit Nouakchott and its colorful fishing port and bustling fish market.
