The first part of the trip will focus on the ethnographic and colonial aspects of the Democratic Republic of the Congo by exploring Kinshasa and remote Mbandaka on the banks of the mighty Congo River. Here we will discover groups of traditional pygmies and the Ekonda, one of the most conservative and fascinating tribes in the Congolese jungle.
The second part focuses on one of the ancient kingdoms of the DR Congo. We will visit the kingdom of Yaka, being received by its king.

The guide of the trip will be Begoña Fernandez-Colmeiro, an expert on the Democratic Republic of the Congo. More information about the guide.

Isolated tribes and sects

Our target is the isolated Bantu and Pygmy communities along the Congo River. We will also visit a local sect; after decolonization sects appeared that mix ancient African beliefs with aesthetic elements and Christian liturgy.

Colonial heritage

Kinshasa is an African megacity with its own unique elements; the 'sapeurs' (society of entertainers and elegant people), the voodoo fight or fetishist fight, the Suku music (Congolese salsa), and the national museum. We will also visit Kisantu town with its beautiful colonial architecture and the old Mbanza Ngungu train station.

Ancient kingdoms

We will explore the Yaka Kingdom, meet King Yaka, and learn about the local monarchies in today's republic. Then we will visit the sacred Yaka village, enjoy a traditional mask dance and a blood sacrifice ritual.
