Raid on Jamalia
We will go to the Yamal tundra (Siberia) in a special vehicle adapted to these extreme conditions. We will have a first contact with the Nenets family that will welcome us during the next few days. We will have dinner in the chum (house of these reindeer herders) traditional food prepared by the women.
Dive into the world of reindeer herding
We will accompany you and immerse ourselves in the world of deer herding, learning more about the life of this nomadic community, dedicated and adapted to the pace of life of the reindeer. In addition, we will have the opportunity to attend the ritual reindeer killing ceremony and see how they carry out the traditional hunting of hares, birds and foxes.
Accompany the Nenets in their daily activities
We will accompany the Nenets to carry out one of their daily activities: ice fishing. When these individuals settle in a new camp after migration, they assemble a team of nets with which they carry out this task for several months. We will be able to attend traditional fishing, in addition to helping them cut wood, crush ice to obtain water and other daily activities of this nomadic community.
We will delve into the role of the Nenets woman
Today we will dedicate the day to Yamal's chum-keepers: their women. We will delve into the role of women within this society and we will understand the importance of the distribution of tasks among its members. The women are the ones who build the houses, treating and weaving the reindeer skin to make the niuk (cover for the chum). In addition, they are in charge of making the clothes of the whole family.
We will witness the construction of the chums
We will be able to observe how they make the wooden structure for the chum: the choice of material, the preparation of the logs and their finishing. Also, we will learn how they repair the sledges or throw the tynzyan (lasso) in khorey (to drive the sled).
