Ethiopia is "The Cradle of Humanity"
In the Dorze Mountains and the Omo Valley you can find the highest concentration of diverse ethnic groups in Ethiopia. It is an incredible orchard of cultures.
The resistance to the Italian colonization and the natural refuge that constitutes its geographic surroundings provided to the groups of the zone an isolation with respect to the western influence. These conditions have given rise to a small oasis with a rich cultural diversity.
Coexistence with the Suri or Surma ethnic group
The Suri or Surma tribe is a semi-nomadic group that lives in the jungles of southwestern Ethiopia, on the most virgin bank of the mythical Omo River, near the border with South Sudan.
The Surma are mainly pastoralist, but to a lesser extent, they also cultivate. They make a special alcoholic beverage, similar to beer, from fermented sorghum.
They keep much of their traditional culture alive. The Surma or Suri ethnic group has a deep-rooted tradition, both among men and women, for body adornments.
On this trip we will enjoy the fascinating aesthetics of labial and lobular dilations: majestic plates of up to 40 cm in diameter.
In addition, we will witness how they adorn their bodies through scarifications, paintings and striking metal bracelets.
Dizi Kingdom Visit
The Dizi are a very ancient people who live in small villages of great beauty on the top of Mount Jebba.
We will live with the Dizi to learn about their way of life and unique aesthetics: upper-class women shape their hair in a conical shape and tattoo their cheeks and foreheads with a corrosive sheet (these are tattoos that disappear over time).
The Dizi are a group of 35,000 people who live from subsistence agriculture in the highlands and grow, among other products, the 'ensete', corn or barley. They also have cattle, goats and chicken and are beekeepers. They speak an Omotic dialect and most of the disciples are Animists although they are also influenced by Christianity.
We will meet the Kachipo, an isolated tribe in the mountains
The Kachipo live isolated in the mountains of the fertile Moga Valley. This is definitely a Last Place...
The Kachipo are itinerant farmers and hunters. They also own some cattle. Its aesthetic is reminiscent of that of the Suri, but its language and way of life are different.
We will be welcomed by the chief and the group of elders who lead the Kachipo society.
