The Amazon is an ecological giant, the size of the European continent. Inside these immense tropical forests, we find more than 600 tribal groups, some of them in a voluntary state of isolation and independence. Last Places’ team of ethnographers and ecotourism specialists has been exploring since 2023 the Brazilian Amazon, from the drier ‘Cerrado’ ecosystem in Mato Grosso and Para States to the flooded primary forests of northern Amazonia. The itinerary of this tribal trip to northern Brazil we present to you is the result of multiple prospections and analyses.

This trip, led by an expert guide born in the Amazon, combines different social and cultural realities of the Amazon; from big commercial towns such as Tabatinga and Benjamin Constant to semi-nomadic tribal groups such as the Matis and Canamari. We will use Last Place's Camp Lodge as a base to explore the forest, its fauna and its peoples.

Visit to Tabatinga

On our tribal trip to northern Brazil, we will begin in the tri-border region between Colombia, Peru and Brazil. We will explore Tabatinga, a town shaped by the history of rubber and by waves of migrants in search of opportunities. We will visit the fish market, the ethnographic museum and the cathedral square, where at sunset we will witness the flight of hundreds of parrots.

Encounter with the Tikuna tribe

In Benjamin Constant, we will immerse ourselves in the culture of the Tikuna people. We will attend the Moça Nova ceremony, during which young girls are presented to society as women. We will discover the symbolism of the masked figures and understand their spiritual connection with the natural world. Later, we will tour the indigenous museum alongside a Tikuna elder and enjoy a fresh Peruvian ceviche on the banks of the Amazon.

Meeting the Marubo in Atalaia do Norte

Our tribal trip to northern Brazil will take us to Atalaia do Norte, an Amazonian town where past and present coexist. There we will meet the Marubo, an ethnic group that lives in a large communal maloca. We will share moments with the families, converse with their chief, and learn about their crafts and traditions.

Immersion with the Matis people

During this tribal trip to northern Brazil, we will venture into the jungle to visit the Matis, one of the unique tribes in the Amazon. We will hike along forest trails until we reach their camp. There we will observe their facial tattoos and piercings and gain insight into the depth of their traditions. We will sit with them around their fire, witness their “test of courage”, and camp near their palm-leaf huts. At dawn, we will join an expedition for gathering and learn the uses of each plant, root or fruit.

Living with the Canamari

In our trip to the north of Brazil, we will also encounter the Canamari people. We will admire their mastery of feather work, basketry and decorated pottery. We will share a picnic lunch with them deep in the forest. Later, we will attend a Christian ceremony in the caboclo community of Sao Rafael. We will observe a mass, a baptism or even a wedding, and understand the blend of indigenous traditions with Christian devotion.

Nature in its purest form

To conclude this tribal trip to northern Brazil, we will enjoy a day of calm at the Last Places camp, surrounded by pristine rainforest. We will have the chance to fish in the river, collect wild fruits or spot exotic birds. We will also explore the camp’s library and the small museum dedicated to Amazonian tribes. Finally, we will navigate the rivers Itaquai, Yavarí and Amazon on our way back to Tabatinga. It will be the moment to bid farewell to the team and celebrate the end of this expedition with dinner in a local restaurant. Thus, we will close our journey to the north of Brazil with a unique experience of culture, nature and unforgettable human encounters.
