Gerewol Festival: Aesthetics, Courtship and Ritual among the Mbororo

The trip to Chad to experience the Gerewol will take us to the heart of the celebrations of the Mbororo, also known as the Woodabe or Peul. After crossing the plains of the Sahel, we will reach nomadic camps where different families and clans gather to take part in one of the most fascinating ceremonial rituals in Africa. From the outset, the trip to Chad to experience the Gerewol will provide insight into the social and symbolic importance of this annual gathering. Before the ceremonies begin, we will meet local chiefs and elders who will explain the meaning of the Gerewol within Mbororo culture. In addition, we will observe how young men begin lengthy preparations related to body aesthetics and ritual courtship.

The men will spend hours applying make-up and creating elaborate hairstyles and adornments. Their relatives will help them braid their hair and attach small protective talismans. Furthermore, they will use ochre, yellow and reddish pigments to highlight the whiteness of their eyes and teeth. In this way, the trip to Chad to experience the Gerewol will reveal how beauty and elegance occupy a central place within Mbororo identity. During the ceremonies, we will witness different collective dances and chants. Among them are the Rummi, associated with welcoming rituals, and the Yakee, linked to family lineages. Finally, we will attend the Gerewol itself, the climax of the festival. The men will stand in long rows while singing and swaying slowly in order to attract the attention of the women. Moreover, they will perform highly distinctive facial expressions, moving their eyes and exaggerating their smiles to emphasise their attractiveness.

The trip to Chad to experience the Gerewol will also allow us to understand the social dimension of the gathering. During these days, different clans exchange news, strengthen alliances and organise ceremonies linked to marriages or rites of passage. We will also learn about the close relationship the Mbororo maintain with cattle and seasonal nomadism, both essential elements of their way of life. Therefore, this experience will offer a profound immersion into a ceremonial tradition where music, dance, identity and seduction form part of a complex cultural universe.

Red Arab Communities: Nomadism and Sahelian Culture

The trip to Chad to experience the Gerewol will also include encounters with Red Arab communities, locally known as the Baggara. During our journeys across the savannah, we will visit some of their settlements and traditional camps. The Baggara form a nomadic confederation of mixed Arab and Arabised African ancestry inhabiting vast regions of the Sahel. Traditionally, their way of life has been closely connected to nomadic cattle herding and seasonal migrations in search of grazing land. In addition, they preserve their own dialect, known as Chadian Arabic. During the trip to Chad to experience the Gerewol, we will observe their lifestyle and discover how many communities continue to maintain pastoral traditions despite contemporary changes. Furthermore, we will understand the importance of cattle within their social and economic organisation. In this way, this stage of the journey will provide a broader perspective on the cultural diversity of the Chadian Sahel. It will also help contextualise the historical relationships between nomadic peoples, trade routes and ways of life adapted to the semi-arid landscapes of Central Africa.
